More than 164,000 miles of highway traverse the U.S., according to the Federal Highway Administration, connecting travelers to people and places across the country. About 6,000 of those miles are tolled, nearly 1,000 miles more than a decade ago, and more than a third of tolled highway miles are concentrated in Florida, Texas and Oklahoma. Tolls can be managed by federal, state or private groups, and funds typically go toward road construction and maintenance.

Bridges and tunnels usually have the steepest per-mile fees – the Holland Tunnel costs up to $15 to travel less than 2 miles under the Hudson River from New Jersey into New York City, and the Lincoln and Kennedy bridges charge up to $4 to make the half-mile trip across the Ohio River between Kentucky and Indiana – but highway travel isn’t always budget-friendly. Bridges and tunnels aside, these are the most expensive toll roads for passenger vehicles to drive in terms of average cost per mile as of April, according to theFederal Highway Administration.
